Pathways to Excellence in Medicine Initiative
Initiative Background
There are pervasive disparities in the numbers of students from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds who become a part of the physician workforce. This gap can contribute to non‐inclusive clinical learning environments and worsened health disparities. This initiative seeks to utilize evidence‐based principles and the groundwork of a decade of experience to engage Philadelphia’s medical students, envisioning what their careers in academic medicine can look like and supporting them as they blaze the path toward realizing their potential as Philadelphia’s future physicians.

Pathways to Excellence in Medicine Mentorship Cohort (MS1s apply in the Fall)
The mentorship program is for medical students from across the Philadelphia region to receive an in-depth look at careers in academic medicine. "Thank you for putting on events like this one. It's very important for aspiring physicians to see those who've already achieved their goal and connect with them to gain tips on how to do the same. It was a very impactful event for me."

"I really enjoyed the talk given by Dr. Montoya-Williams. It was very insightful for me and taught me a lot about academic medicine and what it is like to be a physician-scientist."
Second-year medical student |
"Dr. Ala Stanford's speech was so empowering. It made me reflect on why I am doing what I am doing. Even though right now I am just sitting in a lecture hall taking exam after exam, I know I am a part of something greater."
