September 18th, 2014: "Successfully Navigating Careers in Academic Medicine"

We are excited to announce the first AMP Professional Development Seminar of the 2014-2015 year: “Successfully Navigating Careers in Academic Medicine.” Based on positive feedback from our first session last year entitled, “How to Create a Successful Career in Academic Medicine” we decided our first session this year will build on this theme. Mark your calendars for: Thursday, September 18th, 6:30pm - 7:30pm, Hope Auditorium at CHOP. Space is limited. To RSVP, send e-mail to Alison Culyba at culyba@email.chop.edu.

The session will include presentations by Dr. Eve Higginbotham (“Finding your Compass: Navigating the Landscape of Academic Medicine”) and Dr. Roy Hamilton (“Scaling the Ivory Tower: An Introduction to Careers in Academic Medicine”). Immediately following the formal presentations will be a faculty panel featuring minority physicians across the health system. The panel will include a diverse group of faculty in different career tracks and at different career stages sharing words of wisdom and answering questions from attendees.

Careers in Academic Medicine are incredibly rewarding, but also come with challenges. Understanding strategies for success are essential to mastering academic medical careers. While careers can take slightly different forms at different institutions, several key points hold true throughout academic medicine:

1) Getting educated about academic career trajectories and criteria for promotion early in your career.
2)Seeking mentors
3) Developing a strategy for your current training stage, but never losing sight of the end goal.

Please join us for our upcoming Professional Development Seminar to learn more about keys to thriving in academic medicine from faculty who are successfully navigating these career paths.
