March 20th, 2014: "Building Successful Mentoring Relationships"
AMP hosted our second Professional Development Workshop on
March 20th focused on Mentoring. Attending Faculty from various clinical and
research backgrounds were present to share their experiences as mentees and
mentors. Housestaff and medical students enjoyed walking through a helpful
hands-on exercise to evaluate their current mentoring relationships and
practice how to approach potential mentors. Check out a few of the great tips
that were shared by Dana Beckton, MS (CHOP Office of Diversity & Inclusion;
AMP Advisory Board):
• Know what level of mentoring relationship you are looking for – Information, Skill or Advocacy
• Each type requires a different degree of Trust, Intensity and Accountability
• It’s ok to have more than one mentor for each level
• Get agreement (written) with your mentor on key aspects of the relationship – meeting times and frequency, deliverables, confidentiality, etc.
• Be Active in the relationship – your mentor is taking time out of their day to meet with you. Be accountable for your part in the relationship!
