Penn URIM Visiting Clerkship Program

AMP is excited to partner with the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to establish a visiting clerkship program. The Visiting Clerkship Programs for Students Underrepresented in Medicine encompass numerous opportunities for 4th year medical students to explore rotations at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Hospital (Presby), and Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH). The clerkship includes both sub-internship and elective experiences in top-ranked residency programs. Students not only have the opportunity to spend time learning first-hand what it is like to be a resident at these institutions, but they are paired with resident and faculty mentors and meet with Residency Program Directors to aid in their recruitment and preparation for the interview season and Match Process.  Funding is included!

Program Highlights
Each student is paired with a Faculty and/or Resident mentor in an area of their interest
Each student will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the Residency Program Director in the specialty of their interest
Funding/Stipends up to $1500-2000 to cover travel and housing

Christine Cummings, MD

Jason Green, MD

Plastic Surgery Resident at HUP

"The underrepresented minority clerkship was an invaluable experience that has very positively shaped my surgical career. It affirmed my interest in UPenn Plastic Surgery while being an incredible opportunity to make a strong impression on the program which I'm sure was essential to my ability to match a UPenn. I also made incredible connections with other URM residents in medicine and surgery and any opportunity to build that support network is very welcomed."

Oby B. Ibe, MD, MPH

Internal medicine Resident at HUP

"I will always be grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in the Penn Visiting Clerkship Program and directly experience the rich Penn culture, which is full of intellectually stimulating patient cases, approachable mentors, attendings devoted to trainee education, and a collaborative resident environment. The Penn Internal medicine program has supported me in becoming the dedicated, empathetic, and inquisitive physician I hoped to become. Applying to the Penn Visiting Clerkship Program was one of the best decisions I have ever made because it introduced me to mentors and co-residents that have made profound impacts on my personal and professional career and will remain in my life for years to come."

Osvaldo Mercado, MD

Pediatric Resident at CHOP

"The clerkship gave me the opportunity to meet amazing physicians and see the opportunities that CHOP would allow a resident trainee. Not only did I get the chance to meet a phenomenal staff who I have been so fortunate to learn from, but I also met some of my closet friends and colleagues who I am still in contact with even after graduation. The clerkship was just the first stepping stone in my amazing 3 years at CHOP."
